What is a Barcode Printer & How does it work?
Barcode Label printer is used to print barcode labels which can be put on objects. They are widely used in companies like retail, manufacturing, transport and logistics, healthcare and more.
Two main types of barcode printers are available: Direct Thermal Printers and Thermal Transfer Printers.
In Direct Thermal printers heat is used which causes the paper to turn black. For thermal transfer heat is used to melt information on the ribbon & pass it onto the label. Direct thermal printers are more affordable but when exposed to sunlight and heat, the labels can darken. Because of this reaction, these labels are only used for temporary purposes like indoor shipping labels, or temporary markings.
When your application needs a label to be readable for several years, then you will need a thermal transfer label printer. This is due to the material being “transferred” from the ribbon to the label. The required life of the label will dictate both the ribbon used and the label material used.
Paper labels and wax ribbon are the most economical for thermal transfer printing. But paper can tear and will not hold up to moisture. Wax can rub or scratch off over time. Polyester labels and a resin ribbon is the most durable combination for thermal transfer printing allowing both the label and the resin image to hold up for many years of abuse.
